If you have even an inkling of furthering your knowledge and skills when it comes to speechwriting or executive communications, you have two great opportunities coming up. Two separate conferences. One in the typically cold environs of Washington, D.C.; one in the relative warmth of Arizona. One is about more about improving your writing skills; the other more about the broader executive communications function. Both have world-class speakers. (Full disclosure: I'm a speaker at one of them!)
First on the calendar is the grand-daddy of speechwriting get-togethers: Ragan's 2010 Speechwriters Conference on Feb. 10-12. Location: Mayflower Renaissance Hotel, Washington, DC. This conference offers something for the newbie as well as the veteran. Two tracks that offer plenty of customization. Speakers include a litany of great writers and great people: Paul Murphy from GM, freelancers Pete Weissman and Hal Gordon, author Amy Bernstein, former White House scribe Vinca LaFleur and many, many more.
Plus, check out the pre-conference seminars:
* Mike Long: Six big speechwriting ideas: Transform your talk from acceptable to absolutely awesome.
* Rob Friedman: Soup to Nuts: Everything you need to know to write excellent speeches.
* Vinca LaFleur and Jeff Nussbaum: Flexing your writing muscle: Circuit training for speechwriters
* And yours truly: How to make an audience listen: Editing secrets every speechwriter should know.
The other conference is being arranged by longtime speechwriting insider Dave Murray (editor, Vital Speeches) in conjunction with Communitelligence. It's titled: Building and Protecting Reputation 2010: Executive Communications and Speechwriting in the New Media Age. Details: Feb. 24-25 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Again, this is a who's who of speechwriting and executive comm professionals including: Chris Solie, VP of PNC Financial Services, long-time scribe Ken Askew, author and well-known CEO reputation guru Dr. Leslie Gaines-Ross, Coke's executive communications genius Steve Soltis and many, many more.
Which one to pick? Both look great so you can't go wrong with either. But if you do go to the one in Washington, please stop me in the halls to say hello. Or, if I can break free from the schedule and attend the one in Arizona, too, say Hi to me there!
